Mount Katsuudake
Mt. Katsuudake (or Mt. Katsuu) is situated in Nago, Okinawa. As you drive up the long, winding road, be sure to keep your speed slow as there are lots of twists and turns along with oncoming traffic. When you make it to the end, you will come into a clearing for cars to park. There is a public restroom that consists of traditional Japanese toilets with a hole in the ground! Be sure to bring hand sanitizer, or use the Family Mart bathroom before you get there!
As you look up you will see the tip of the mountain you are about to climb. The peak looks very pointy! It is 452 meters above sea level. So, even though it is a good climb, it is not the tallest mountain around. The tallest mountain in Okinawa would be Mount Omoto in Ishigaki. Second tallest is Mount Yonaha.
As we began our ascent, we passed a small sign shaped like a whale, to mark the start of the trek. We then made our way up some stairs. The trail is marked along the way by red paint on the rocks or red ribbons tied around the various trees, not that you are likely to lose your way as the trail is very well maintained. It begins to become very rocky and some parts we had to use hands as well as our feet to climb, although, it is not a difficult hike. It took us around 30-40 mins from the start of the trail to the peak.
At the peak of Mount Katsuudake, you will reap your reward. The panoramic views of Okinawa are simply stunning. You can see the ocean, the city of Nago, and so much more. There are plenty of perfect angles for you to capture the most picturesque of memories.
The hike up this mountain is definitely worth the sore legs the next day!
Also, worth mentioning, is Nago Pineapple park and Orion Happy Park which are both close by. Not too far away are plenty of restaurants and hotels on route 58 sitting on the coast line, should you wish to stick around and experience more of the area.
**If you are into Geocaching, this mountain has a a little surprise for you**
