Just south of Kyoto is the ancient city of Nara, famous not only for its Buddhist temples but also its polite bowing deer that freely roam through the park. There are over 1,200 deer in Nara Park and although they are obviously tamer than deer in the wild, they can be aggressive especially if they know you have food. The deer are said to be the divine messengers of the Kasuga Grand shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Nara’s main attractions, and have even been designated as a national treasure. The polite deer will bow to you for food or if you just bow to them.
