Buxa Fort is one of the popular tourist places for trekking in Dooars. It is located 30 km from Alipurduar, the nearest town from Buxa Fort. It is situated at the height of 2884 ft above the sea level. Buxa Fort has a historical value. In ancient time there was a conflict between Bhutan and Coach kings. Bhutanese would use this fort to protect silk route. Later British Govt. captured Buxa Fort. They used it to imprisoned the freedom fighters. There is a rumour that Netaji Subhash Ch Bose was once imprisoned in the Buxa Fort but this is not true. Though a number of freedom fighters were imprisoned here. This was the most isolated prison cell of India after the cellular jail of Andaman. If you want to go Buxa Fort you have to go first rajabhatkhawa check post. From there you have to drive 15 km through the Buxa Tiger Reserve to reach Santarabari. You can take guide from there. After Santarabari you have to drive 2.5km more to reach foothill. You have to park your car at foothill and have to trek 2.5km more to reach Buxa Fort.
This 2.5 km trekking road is very adventurous and the very same time risky and beautiful. You can see some stunning view of this region during this short trek. The condition of the prison cells is very deplorable. Some maintenance is needed to save this historic fort. If you want you can visit Lepchakha from Buxa Fort. This is a small village of Bhutanese and a popular view point. If you are planning to visit Dooars, don’t miss this place. In this video I have tried to show some glimpses of Buxa trek road and Buxa Fort where I had gone with my friends a few years ago.
