Two covered shopping arcades “Shinkyogoku and Teramachi Streets” are the most popular shopping streets in all of Kyoto, the ancient capital city of Japan.
These two streets form the heart of Kyoto’s main shopping district.
Kyoto is full of appeal as a tourist destination, but we particularly recommends shopping at These two Streets.
The eastern street, known as Shinkyogoku, is filled with souvenirs of almost every description.
If you’re looking for fantastic Kyoto souvenirs, Shinkyogoku Shopping Street is the place to go.
The western street, known as Teramachi, is not only a tourist attraction but also a place where locals come to shop for clothes, home decor, and accessories.
This 800m stretch of the street is full of famous shops that are representative of Kyoto.
Here you will find a variety of both traditional and modern items, including kimonos, traditional Japanese hair accessories, Japanese jackets, pottery, and Buddhist objects.
Most vendors don’t speak fluent English but they are friendly and willing to help you.
Both shopping streets can get pretty crowded.
There are always many people around on the weekend because there are lots of people from different places, so if you hate crowds you should go on a week day or early in the morning when the shops open (9-10am).

新京極通りと寺町通りは、京都で最も人気のある商店街で、京都のショッピング街の中心です。
京都は観光地としての魅力に満ちていますが、日本を訪れる方には、この通りで買い物をされることをお勧めします。
”新京極”として知られる東の通りには、ほぼすべての種類のお土産がたくさんあります。
素敵な京都のお土産を探すなら、新京極商店街がおすすめです。
”寺町”として知られる西の通りは、観光名所であるだけでなく、地元の人々が衣服、装飾品、アクセサリーを買いに来る場所でもあり、この800mくらいの通りには、京都を代表する有名なお店がたくさんあります。
着物や伝統的な日本のアクセサリーや陶器、骨董品や仏具などの他、飲食店やアパレル店、本屋なども混在しており、伝統的なものと現代的なものの両方を見つけることができます。
ほとんどの店員は流暢な英語を話せませんが、みんなとてもフレンドリーで喜んで買い物を手伝ってくれます。
ここはかなり混雑することがあり、週末はいつもさまざまな場所からたくさんの人が集まるので、人混みが嫌いでしたら、平日または朝早い時間に行った方がよいです（店が開く午前9時から10時頃）。
