Our last day in Kyoto was spent touring the historic neighborhoods and eating tons of local food. We started with a free walking tour of the Gion and Higashiyama districts. These districts were so wonderfully preserved it was like taking a step back in time to when Kyoto was the capital of Japan! The pagodas, shrines, and old wooden storefronts give this area such a mystical feeling. After our tour, we got lunch at the Nishiki Market where we sampled just about everything. We didn’t quite know what everything was, but it was all delicious. After the overwhelming chaos of the market we took some time to relax with some matcha tea and sweet treats at a local shop that felt like an oasis of calm in the middle of bustling Kyoto. Before calling it a night, we spent the evening on a tour of several Izakaya where we got some drinks and more great local dishes. This was an amazing way to finish our time off in Kyoto!
