If you’ve ever looked at back of the 10 yen coin and wondered “What’s that building?”, head to Uji, 30min south of Kyoto and you will find the answer.

Uji’s star attraction is Byodoin, a Buddhist temple of the Jodo sect. In my opinion, this one of the Top 5 most beautiful temples in the country. The main feature here is the stunning Phoenix Hall which is what is depicted on the 10 yen coin.

Byodoin looks great during the day, but I think it looks even more spectacular during its autumn illumination event. This was started a few years ago and draws large crowds like many other temple Illuminations in Kyoto.

This temple is very, very difficult to shoot at night due to the restrictions and the crowds. I’ve noticed the set route that needs to be followed has changed from year to year. Here are two shots of the Phoenix Hall from 2019 and 2018.

Away from the Phoenix Hall, there is a wonderfully designed museum containing various treasures of Byodoin. Most of the museum is underground so as not to disturb the view of the Phoenix Hall.

Next to the museum is also a nice sitting area looking into a garden. I like the mix of modern and traditional materials with the design here.

We hope the autumn illuminations will be on again this year at Byodoin!
