This is a short documentary of the video I compiled during my Japan Trip.
Magome-juku (馬籠宿) was the forty-third of the sixty-nine stations of the Nakasendō, an ancient road that connected Kyoto and Edo (modern day Tokyo) during the Edo period. It was also the last of eleven stations along the Kisoji. This well-preserved section of the old route is in the present-day city of Nakatsugawa, Gifu Prefecture, Japan.
Takayama (高山市) is a city located in Gifu, Japan. Takayama is best known for its inhabitants’ expertise in carpentry. It is believed carpenters from Takayama worked on the Imperial Palace in Kyoto and on many of the temples in Kyoto and Nara. The city came under the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate. However, the high altitude and separation from other areas of Japan kept the area fairly isolated, allowing Takayama to develop its own culture over about a 300-year period. In this video you will observe a traditional shopping street – much like how it would have being in the Edo period.
