Cycling can be a challenging sport and finding motivation to train does not always come easy. I’ve struggled with motivation cycles for the last few years of my cycling career and recently am back on the upswing with my motivation to train starting to come back.

I’ve found that two very important aspects for maintaining a good and healthy training schedule to becoming a stronger cyclist are:
#1 Setting measurable goals
#2 Having a support network
Measurable goals are goals that can be quantified. For example, cycling at least 100km a week, at least 5 days a week, going to the gym at least 3 days a week, dropping 5kg, dropping 30 seconds off of a PR. All of these are examples of measurable goals.
Having a support network means having people around you who help support and motivate you. Having a training partner to cycle with on the weekends or even weekday nights after/before work. Recently I’ve started a weekly weekday night ride interval workout group, and while we are weaker and less motivated to train when we are alone, when we are together the motivation and energy is great! Having a supportive family / partner can also be a big help since you can work together and help push each other for your respective goals.
Finding motivation is a continuous battle and is never ending. It also is a big help to have someone to keep you accountable. That’s where you guys come in. I’m planning to start training consistently from now on again and I need you guys to help motivate / push me.
Good luck with your training and respective goals!
The advice from this video can be applied to any type of cycling (road bike, mountain bike, cyclocross, track) and other general things like studying Japanese..
