City Description:
Tokyo, Japan’s busy capital, mixes the ultramodern and the traditional, from neon-lit skyscrapers to historic temples. The opulent Meiji Shinto Shrine is known for its towering gate and surrounding woods. The Imperial Palace sits amid large public gardens. The expansive Toyosu fish market is known for its morning tuna auction. The Tokyo SkyTree tower offers expansive views of the city from its public observation deck. Tokyo is famed for its vibrant food scene, and its Shibuya and Harajuku districts are the heart of its trendy teen fashion culture.

Tokyo is busy year-round. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters. Popular events are New Year’s Day, when shrines are quite crowded; cherry blossom festivals (Apr) throughout the city; the Sanja Matsuri (May), with parades of portable shrines; the Sumida River Fireworks Festival (Jul); the festivals of Obon (Aug), a Buddhist holiday that celebrates ancestors; and Awa Odori (Aug), with parades around Koenji Station.
