Dhofar (Zafar in Arabic) province is truly magical region in Oman, located on the southern coast of the Arabian peninsula. It is a rather mountainous area separated from pretty much everywhere else in the country by a thousand kilometres of stony desert, the region’s history and identity have always been largely separate from that of the rest of the Sultanate. Fabled in antiquity as the source of the legendary frankincense trade, Dhofar boasted one of Arabia’s oldest and most cosmopolitan cultures. Dhofar Governorate is famous for its seasonal weather, locally known as monsoon or “Khareef” , when it witnesses its best period, clothed in lush greenery and its hills surrounded by white fog. Dhofar includes a distinctive natural diversity where the coast blends with the mountains and the desert. Mountains rising to a height of 1,500 metres and then descending into a flat plain that embraces sandy beaches stretching for hundreds of kilometres.
