Travel with us and explore the UNESCO site of Shirakawa-go in the Gifu prefecture. Situated between the Japanese Alps, we had a two day itinerary in the village of Shirakawa-go and then in the nearby city of Takayama.
Our itinerary:
– Arriving at Shirakawa-go by bus from Takayama Bus Centre
– Exploring Shirakawa-go farmhouses (gassho-zukuri) and learning about their history making this a UNESCO heritage site and deemend Important Cultural Pieces of the Gifu prefecture
– Shopping at the various local merchant artisan and delicacy shops in Ogimachi
– Visited Ogimachi (the famous 3 houses where everyone has taken a picture!)
– Stayed overnight at one of the farmhouses in the village (Shimizu Inn)
– Walked up to the Tenshukaku Observatory for a viewpoint of Shirakawa-go from above (must do!)
– Ate our way through the different street snacks available
– Crossed the Desai bridge and visited the Shirakawa-go open air museum
– Headed to Takayama and visited the Edo period Sanmachi Suji (street) lined with shops, restaurants, and breweries (don’t forget to try the Hida beef crackers!)
– Had an interesting experience with finding dinner options in Takayama
– Visited Miyagawa Morning Market for some local goodies and (more) snacks!
– Hida beef barbecue for lunch before we left Takayama, and the beautiful Japanese Alps region
Watch as we try to capture (as best we can) the quaint little village of Shirakawa-go. With their mountains and Japanese alps, and coniferous trees surrounding us. It shows us a different side of Japan apart from the bright city lights. First, I have to say that Shirakawa-go is like an fairy tale, anime village with its lush rice fields and unique farmhouses. We visited the museums, learned about the gassho-zukuri (farmhouse) structures, tried hida beef croquettes and crackers, and shopped the streets of Takayama – both Sanmachi Suji and Miyagawa Morning Market. We also stayed overnight at a farmhouse, and show you what one night at the inn entails – it was such a great experience!
