The Sagano Bamboo Forest in Arashiyama, Kyoto is one of the most beautiful bamboo groves in the world. It is just surreal.
It’s free to walk through and it sits right next to the Tenryuji Temple which is well worth visiting also.
Kyoto’s bamboo forest is more of a large bamboo grove but it does go back a ways.
It has a history going back centuries, but was officially made part of Kyoto City in 1931. The Sagano Bamboo Forest is worth a relaxing stroll and a great way to avoid getting “templed out” while visiting Kyoto. It’s always open and takes less than 20 minutes to go through.
