Matsumae Town is located in the southern tip of Hokkaido’s Oshima Peninsula. Its most famous attraction is Matsumae Park, a cherry blossom park built around the site of the Matsumae Castle (also known as Fukuyama Castle). From late April to May, over 10,000 sakura trees of around 250 varieties bloom in succession, painting the entire area in various shades of pink and white. The Matsumae Sakura Festival is also held during this period.
