Welcome to a Conversation with Cunard QM2’s designer Stephen Payne.

I was thrilled to have this conversation with Naval architect Stephen Payne – the designer of Cunard’s Queen Mary 2. We talked about his passion for Ocean Liners, cruise ships and of course the QM2!

Stephen shares his history with ocean liners, from first stepping aboard QE2 in 1969 to sailing on the SS. France and later realising his dream and becoming a naval architect.

Stephen worked on Carnival’s Holiday class & Fascination class, Holland America’s Statendam and Rotterdam as well as the Costa Atlantica before being selected to lead the team to design Queen Mary 2 – the world’s largest, longest, tallest and most expensive ocean liner!

Stephen shares some of the secrets of QM2 including:
– QM2’s maximum speed,
– how QM2 handles on the Atlantic,
– how QM2 handles a force 12 storm,
– the role James Cameron’s 1997 Titanic movie played in Carnival buying Cunard,
– some information about the engines including the gas turbines and Diesel engine setup and
– the legacy of QM2.
