静岡県・磐田市。ここはジュビロ磐田で有名な都市である。ヤマハ発動機の本社がある事でも有名。かつては（律令時代以降）、遠江国の国府・国分寺が置かれた古代の政治文化の中心都市であり、戦国時代から江戸時代にかけては、東海道宿場町である「見付宿」があった見付地区が発達した。東海道本線敷設以後は駅が設置された中泉地区も発展。見付と中泉が合併した1942年以降は郡名に由来した磐田の自治体名で呼ばれることになった。
近年は、Jリーグのジュビロ磐田の本拠地として有名である。また、日本ラグビーフットボール協会 トップリーグ ヤマハ発動機ジュビロ、日本女子ソフトボールリーグ ドリーム☆ワールドもある。
「スポーツのまち」として全国的に有名で小中学校のグラウンドの芝生化や総合型地域スポーツクラブの育成、スポーツによる健康づくりの推進、スポーツ合宿やスポーツ大会の拠点づくりを重要整備としている。磐田スポーツ交流の里・ゆめりあのほかジュビロ磐田や静岡産業大学が本拠地を置くため、市内のいたるところにサッカー場が見られる。全日本高等学校女子サッカー選手権大会を第13回から継続開催するなど女子サッカーの聖地化を目指している。
2005年4月1日に、旧磐田市と磐田郡竜洋町、福田町、豊田町、豊岡村が新設合併して、現在の磐田市となった。
