Autumn at Nara’s famed Tanzan Shrine can be a truly magical experience, especially at night. Originally built as a Buddhist temple by Fujiwara no Katamari, the influential and powerful founder of the Fujiwara clan that governed Japan during the Heian era, Tanzan eas soon converted to a shrine amidst the anti-Buddhist sentiment of the Meiji period.
.
Tanzan is the world’s only 13 storey pagoda, and boasts a truly fantastical light-up event in November and December, when winter fast approaches and the autumn foliage rules the landscape.
