1. Yoyogi Park
Visiting parks is a great way to take a break from the concrete jungle and to
explore a different part of the city. One of the parks in Tokyo you must visit
is the Yoyogi Park. It is one of the largest parks in the city, and is filled with
a variety of trees from different parts of Japan. These trees are planted by
volunteers. Autumn is an excellent time to visit the place because you will
see ginko biloba trees turn yellow. Tokyo is magical. Moving around is easy,

case you get tempted to buy some food and other trinkets in nearby shops.

3. Hanami
Japan is known for its beautiful cherry blossoms. If you’re lucky enough to
visit Tokyo during spring, you can join the hanami – an annual ritual where
people take a stroll and enjoy the view of the sakura (cherry blossoms). You
can visit many different parks in Tokyo to appreciate the beauty of these
spring blossoms for free. Hanami is the Japanese traditional custom of
enjoying the transient beauty of flowers (called “hana”).
4. Shibuya Crossing
The Shibuya Crossing is a famous tourist spot in Tokyo. This pedestrian
crossing has been featured in several movies and photoshoots. Seeing it in
person and crossing this pedestrian scramble can be an overwhelming
experience.
5. Watch a Sumo Wrestling Practice
Another thing you must try while in Tokyo is witnessing a sumo wrestling
practice. There are some days when sumo training centers let visitors watch
their wrestlers train. The wrestlers usually practice early in the morning and
can get pretty crowded when opened to the public, so come early.
6. Imperial Palace East Garden
If you want to get a glimpse of Japan’s history, you must check out the
Tokyo Imperial Palace. Most parts of the palace are not open to the public,
but you can enter the eastern part of the garden where you can find many
historical artifacts.
7. Meiji Shrine
Another historical spot you can visit in Tokyo is the Meiji Shrine. The shrine
was made in honor of the first emperor of modern Japan, Emperor Meiji and
his wife, Empress Shoken. The Meiji Shrine was destroyed during the war,
but it was reconstructed a few years after.
8. Advertising Museum Tokyo
The next place you can visit for free is the Advertising Museum in Tokyo.
This is a very interesting museum because it showcases old advertisements
that show Japan’s commercial evolution over the past few decades. The
advertising museum is run by the largest ad agency in Japan called Dentsu.
You can also enjoy watching some famous TV commercials worldwide
through video consoles placed in the museum.
9. Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building
Want to take a view of Tokyo’s skyline? Then you must go up the
Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. The place offers free observation decks
that give visitors a spectacular panoramic view of Tokyo. The building is 243
meters tall, and has two towers, each with its own viewing deck. It used to
be Tokyo’s tallest building up until 2007.
10. Tsukiji Fish Market
Last on the list, and probably the most interesting thing you can do in Tokyo
for free is to witness large fish getting auctioned. To experience this, you
must visit the Tsukiji Fish Market. This is Japan’s largest fish market and is
famous for holding fish auctions. If you want to check out this event, you
must arrive at the fish market before 5AM. Yes, you heard that right.
