Eating insects is becoming more popular around the world but I would never expect eating grasshoppers from a tinned can in Japan. Mr. Kanso is one of the most unique restaurants in Osaka. A tiny food bar serving 300 different kinds of canned foods from all over the world ranging from canned BBQ eel to canned sea urchin to canned stewed grasshoppers. The bar is cheaper than your common restaurant due to not having a kitchen, no chef, no menu’s and no waiter but due to the rareness of certain cans prices can vary quite a bit.
We selected the following 5 canned foods for our Mr. Kanso ultimate review; Unagi (BBQ eel), Toritama (chicken meat + chicken egg), Dashimakitamago (sushi egg roll), Buta (heated stewed pork) and Inago (stewed grasshoppers).

My friends Yuri and Momo from Osaka joined me on this crazy canned food adventure, it was their first time at Mr. Kanso as well. Remarkably, they had never heard of this place before making it a hidden secret in Osaka every tourist should check out.
The grasshoppers turned out to be more delicious than initially anticipated. Due to still being quite crunchy, it had a nice sweet flavor and taste more like chips than the remnants of a nasty insect.
In conclusion, my favorite canned food was the unagi, BBQ eel but the dashimakitamago (cold sushi egg roll) came very close. It makes sense since the dashimakitamago is their best-selling item.
I want to thank my friends Momo and Yuri for joining me on this food adventure, it was a lot of fun.
Please let me know if you would like to see Momo and Yuri again in a future Reformatt episode.
