The Christkindlmarket – German Christmas Market In Chicago, Illinois 2018 – Schnitzel & Ornaments!
We love going to Chicago, Illinois, during the Christmas Holiday season! There are a lot of special events going on in the city that we like to go see and do. One of those is the Christkindlmarket, or German Christmas Market. In 2018, it was held daily from November 16 all the way through Christmas Eve. Situated in Daley Plaza, the Christkindlmarket takes up the entire plaza, all under the watchful gaze of the huge Picasso statue!
Why should you go? For the food, the Christmas ornaments, and the fun! There is great food everywhere you look, much of it authentically German. You’ll find Schnitzel, Doner Kabab, Poutine, Potato Pancakes, and Sauerkraut. There are hand painted glass ornaments, hand-carved wooden nativity scenes, and many traditional German Christmas decorations. It’s a great place to add to your Beer Stein or Christmas Village collections, or get them started! Some world famous designers such as Kathe Wohlfahrt have shops set up here, and whether you’re in a buying mood or not, it’s fun to look at the beautiful handiwork on display. We love walking around the Christmas Market with the smells of the hot chocolate, roasted almonds, and spiced cider all mixed together. And it would be wrong to go home without some delicious chocolate. If you go at the right time, you’ll also get to hear some traditional German Polka music! It’s a great time, and an annual tradition for us. Go if you get the chance!
