A ryokan is a traditional Japanese Inn that originated in the Edo period when inns served travelers along Japan’s highways. Ryokans feature tatami-matted rooms, communal baths, and other public areas where guests wear yukata (a casual light kimono).

The only drawback for us is sleeping on futons on the floor but the ambiance and chance to immerse oneself in a Japanese way of life long gone by makes up for that. Prepare for tons of food in all videos that follow because the multiple courses were a feast for the eyes, if not only for the palate. There were some “eewwws” each day…
