Saskatoon is happening. It’s true!
It’s been a while since the GCAT crew has been in a place with such energized people who are enjoying life and carrying such a sense of community spirit and pride in their town. This could really be felt in Saskatoon, especially along Broadway Avenue, a totally hip strip in the middle of the city.
Lined with theatres, restaurants, shops, murals and sculptures, Broadway Ave is a focal point for eating, shopping and just hanging out. It’s full of local young people, families and lots of tourists as well (i.e. the GCAT Crew!). It’s a cool spot with a casual air to it. Nowhere attests to this more than Il Secondo a chic but casual Italian bakery and pizzeria on a leafy side street off Broadway Ave.
The brother and sister tandem who run the family business are representative of the street itself. Their beautiful little bakery-café-restaurant is not only a place to meet, hang-out and be seen, it also serves up delectable Italian coffee, baked goods and food. It’s a spin-off of their successful Italian bakery (circa 1932) found in another part of Saskatoon. But when Broadway Ave started becoming so popular Tracey Muzzolini and her brother (the handsome guy putting the pizza in the wood fired oven!) took a special Verace Pizza Napoletana Americas (VPN) course in California, to obtain special certification that confirms that they cook to precise Italian standards.
They use a wood burning oven, homemade dough made from Caputa pizza flour and San Marzano plum tomatoes, both imported specially from Italy. We had the pizza margherita — tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, basil and pecorino romano (a hard sheep’s milk cheese that grates well) and the pizza prosciutto e funghi. Both were pure heaven! We’re not sure if we ever had pizza that good before in our lives!
Il Secondo is just one of the many fun and hip places along the strip. It’s all happening, rain or shine. When you go to Saskatoon get yourself to Broadway Ave and see for yourself.
It’s a trip well worth making … for the pizza alone!
