Lord and founder of Sendai Date Masamune was a powerful daimyō in northern Japan in the time of swords and samurai. A top vassal of Shōgun Tokugawa, he lived and ruled 400 years ago.

That part of Japan’s history has now passed, but still his decendants and those of his warriors gather in ceremony at Masamune’s tomb (Zuihōden) at the coming of the new year.
