Japan’s Central Route through the Setouchi Region has so many highlights, I could have spent weeks touring JUST there! From the mountainous Iya Valley, to the glacial waters and boat ride on the Oboke Gorge, to handmade soba with locals and a breathtaking overnight stay at a traditional Kominka on a mountaintop, these were some of my favorite memories of the whole trip! Don’t miss the somewhat scary (but also very fun) walk across the Kazura Bridge! And if you like Udon, stop by the Nakano Udon school to learn how to make it yourself!
When taking this route, don’t forget to swing by the Naruto Whirlpools to admire this natural water phenomenon up close and while you are there, stop by the Ostuka Museum.
Take home a beautiful local craft–a scarf or blanket dyed in the traditional Japanese aizome indigo method!
