Fort Goryokaku (Early to mid May)
Fort Goryokaku (五稜郭) is a star shaped, Western style citadel. This massive fortress was built in the last years of the Edo Period for the defense of Hakodate against the imperialist threat posed by the Western powers. After the fort had lost its military importance, it was eventually became a public park in the 1914. More than one thousand cherry trees were planted along its moats, making it one of Hokkaido’s best cherry blossom spots.

Access Information for Fort Goryokaku
From Hakodate Station, board the tram to “Goryokaku Koen Mae” (五稜郭公園前). The one-way journey takes 10 minutes with a cost of 230 yen. From where the fortress is another ten minutes on foot.

Hakodate Park (Early to mid May)
Hakodate Park (函館公園,Hakodate Koen) is one of Japan’s first ever Western style parks. It is located at the foot of Mount Hakodate. Over four hundreds cherry trees are planted around its paths, fountain, mini zoo and children’s playground. During the peak season, cherry trees are illuminated and many street stall are stand in a row. The Hakodate City Museum is also located on the park’s grounds.

From Hakodate Station, board the tram for Aoyagicho Station(青柳町) The one-way journey takes about 10 minutes with a cost of 230yen. From where the park is another 4minutes on foot.
