The Japanese government has announced a revision of its visa fees that is set to come into effect from July 1, 2026. Under the new structure, visa fees for foreign tourists will increase fivefold from 3,000 yen(₹1,755 approx.) to 15,000 yen (₹8,778 approx.). This means that a trip to Japan could soon become a little more expensive. Here’s what we know so far.

Japan To Increase Tourist Visa Fees From July 1, 2026

Thanks to its amazing culture, food and travel experiences, Japan is becoming increasingly popular among travellers from across the globe. But now, a holiday to this anime-loving nation could soon become a little more expensive for foreign tourists. According to The Straits Times, entry visa fees will be hiked fivefold from 3,000 yen (₹1,755 approx.) to 15,000 yen (₹8,778 approx.) from July 1, 2026.

Reportedly, this marks the first increase since 1978 and comes amid rising inflation. Moreover, issuance fees for multiple-entry visas, which allow visitors to enter Japan multiple times over a set period, will also increase. Travellers applying for this visa type will now have to pay 30,000 yen (₹17,557 approx.) instead of 6,000 yen (₹3,511 approx.).

What Does It Mean For Indian Travellers?

According to Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, the move is not expected to have an immediate impact on inbound tourism. While the price jump looks massive, it is still small compared to other travel expenses such as flights, hotels and food in Japan. However, it is something travellers will now need to factor into their budget while planning a trip.

Countries sometimes increase visa fees to keep up with inflation, manage overtourism and improve tourist services and immigration processes. The hike will definitely impact international tourists planning to visit Japan after July 2026. But we don’t think many travellers would postpone a trip to the country because of the additional cost. If you are visiting, make time for famous ramen, unique cafes, anime shops and the iconic Shibuya Crossing.
