As a symbol of longevity, the graceful red-crowned crane has been treasured by Japanese for centuries. Normally migrant, the cranes in the wetland of Kushiro Shitsugen National Park in Hokkaido can be seen year-round. The resident crane population of Tsurui village (which literally means ‘village where cranes stay’) is now over 1000 and growing steadily.
