Officials with the Japan Institute for Health Security recorded 30 additional measles during the last week of March, bringing the total cases for the year to date to 197.

About one quarter of the cases have been reported in Tokyo (48), followed by Kagoshima (24), Aichi (23) and Kanagawa (19).

This is a 240 percent increase in cases compared to the same period in 2025 when 58 cases were reported.

The main factor behind the increase is believed to be the spread of the virus brought in by people who were infected in outbreak areas overseas.
