TOKYO, Japan — Former Marshall High School runner Kate Bucher participated in the Tokyo Marathon on Sunday, March 1.
The 23-year-old Bucher recorded a time of 2 hours, 58 minutes, 38 seconds over the 26.2-mile course.
In the grand scope, Bucher placed 148th out of 9,720 female finishers. She was 66th out of 634 runners in her age group (20-24 years old). Her time at the halfway point was 1:23.51.

There were 37,239 runners overall (with Kate placing 1,856 among the expansive group).
Bucher has completed what’s considered the seven major marathons, and she’s currently the youngest American finisher and third youngest among world runners.

Bucher was part of a Marshall squad that won the Big South Conference cross country team championship her junior and senior seasons — then running one season at Minnesota State in Mankato. She also played scholastic volleyball for the Tigers.
Jack Bucher, Kate’s grandfather, is a Pipestone resident. Kate’s father Greg Bucher was a former wrestler at Southwest Minnesota State University. She is the daughter of Lisa and Greg Bucher of Marshall.
