TOKYO – Tokyo Tower, the 333-meter landmark of the Japanese capital, was illuminated in blue on Thursday to mark World Autism Awareness Day, with the color signifying hope and healing.
People with autism and their family members wearing blue T-shirts attended the lighting ceremony, with other facilities across the nation also lit up.
“I hope that the public’s understanding of autism will deepen even a little and we can see a society in which people understand and respect each other’s differences,” said Sachiko Iga, whose 37-year-old child, Kaoru, has autism.
Autism symptoms include showing a strong preference for routines and difficulties in social communication.
