French President Emmanuel Macron arrives in Japan on Tuesday. He plans to hold talks with Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae and meet Emperor Naruhito during a three-day visit.
It will be his fourth trip to the country as president. His previous visit was in May 2023, when he attended the Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima.
France is scheduled to host the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains in June. Ahead of that, it intends to step up coordination with Japan in responding to developments in Iran and Ukraine.
Paris also aims to strengthen cooperation with Tokyo on security in light of what it sees as China’s increasingly hegemonic actions in Asia.
The French presidential office says issues concerning Iran will be a key topic during the upcoming talks. The conflict is having a widespread impact on the global economy.
France also plans to reaffirm its commitment to deepening its partnership with Japan in various fields, including civil nuclear power, artificial intelligence and space technologies.
A French expert says it is important for the two countries to work together on economic security and increase their influence in the international community as the United States and China expand their global presence.
