TOKYO – Japan has called on China to swiftly retract its sanctions on a pro-Taiwan Japanese lawmaker, a senior government spokesman said Monday, referring to such actions as “absolutely unacceptable” and “extremely regrettable.”
The sanctions on Keiji Furuya, a House of Representatives member who heads a cross-party group dedicated to promoting Tokyo-Taipei relations, are “unilateral measures that appear intended to put pressure on those who take a different view,” Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Masanao Ozaki told a press conference.
