TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Visitors from Japan led Taiwan’s tourism recovery in 2025, accounting for 17.3% of arrivals, according to statistics released by the Ministry of the Interior, per CNA.
More than 8.57 million international tourists visited Taiwan in 2025, representing a 9.1% increase from the previous year. Travelers from Hong Kong and Macau made up the second-largest share at 15.3%, followed by South Korea (11.9%), the United States (8.3%), and China (7.4%).
Compared with 2024, the number of visitors from China rose by 45.4%, while arrivals from Malaysia declined by 10.2%.
The ministry’s latest report on entry and exit data showed that 27.463 million people entered Taiwan in 2025, while 27.402 million departed. A total of 41.219 million travelers passed through Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, accounting for 75.1% of all arrivals and departures.
Passenger traffic at Kaohsiung International Airport reached 5.727 million, while Taipei Songshan Airport handled 3.025 million passengers. Compared with 2024, Kaohsiung International Airport recorded the highest growth in passenger volume at 23.3%, followed by Taoyuan International Airport at 7.6%.
The ministry said Taiwanese accounted for nearly 70% of all cross-border travelers in 2025, followed by foreign nationals at approximately 24%, and residents of Hong Kong and Macau at 4.4%.
Around 18.944 million Taiwanese traveled overseas in 2025. Japan remained the most popular destination, accounting for 35.5% of trips, followed by China at 17.1% and South Korea at 9.7%.
Compared with 2024, travel to Japan saw the largest increase, rising by 724,701 travelers, or 12.1%. China ranked second, with an additional 467,227 travelers, representing a 16.9% increase.
