The Albion goalkeeper has been working with Thomas Tuchel’s group and was among the unused substitutes for the 1-1 draw with Uruguay.
Tuchel has made several changes to the squad ahead of Tuesday’s game with Japan, bringing in 11 players from the original list of 35.
John Stones has pulled out of the Japan game.
Stones was not involved against Uruguay after feeling his calf in training as the 31-year-old’s frustrations with injuries continue, and he will play no part in Tuesday’s friendly having been sent back to Manchester City for treatment.
The defender has played just five times for his club since the November international break and is struggling to get a consistent run of games.
In addition to Stones’ withdrawal, the Football Association said Aaron Ramsdale, Fikayo Tomori, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Adam Wharton, Noni Madueke, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka were leaving the England camp before the Japan match at Wembley.
Clips from parts of the England training sessions both at Wembley and St George’s Park have shown Steele obviously enjoying his first call-up to the senior Three Lions group.
His role will be to train with and support the goalkeepers ahead of him in the pecking order.
If that goes well in the current camp, there is every chance he will fulfil the same role at the summer’s World Cup.
Japan come into the game after a 1-0 win in Scotland which saw Kaoru Mitoma play the second half.
