Has The Exit 8 got you hooked on Japanese subway passages? This anomaly game has certainly had an effect on us, between the game itself and the recent movie, and now there’s a website to further indulge our liminal desires.
If you’ve not played The Exit 8 (and you’ve missed out on a treat), it sees you exploring a looping section of a Japanese subway, spotting changes that range from the subtle to the menacing. But, even without the anomalies, there’s something oddly hypnotic about the station’s signposts and clean tiles.
But, while you only get to explore a small section of a fictional, Japanese-style station, one bright spark has taken things a step further. Using the PlayCanvas/Supersplat browser platform, Takashi Koyama has recreated the whole of Japan’s Kyoto Station in 3D.
This isn’t their interpretation of the station, either; they’ve meticulously scanned every inch and, as a result, you can explore Kyoto Station in your browser. Yes, you get those pleasingly tiled walls and floors but you can also wander past news stands, gaze at vending machines and more.

It’s a bit fiddly to get to grips with at first (we recommend pressing the fly camera button) but it’s a delight to just virtually potter around. We’re half expecting something to come out of the walls, but that hasn’t happened.. yet.
You can find this brilliant in-browser exploration here, and thanks to PlayCanvas’s own Will Eascott for putting it on our radar. And if you’ve not played The Exit 8, it’s available right now on console, VR and mobile.
