HOKKAIDO (TR) – Hokkaido Prefectural Police arrested a high school girl over the alleged attempted theft of rice from a market in Sapporo City on Wednesday, reports TV Asahi (Mar. 26).

At around noon, the 17-year-old girl allegedly grabbed a bag of rice weighing five kilograms — worth 4,838 yen — from a supermarket in Kikusuimotomachi, Shiroishi Ward.

According to the police, the girl was taken by a security guard to the market office after she failed to pay. However, she then fled.

She is suspected of assaulting a female employee, aged in her 30s, who chased after her by kicking him in the leg.

Upon her arrest, the girl said, “I shoplifted because I didn’t have any money. I did kick the store employee.”

According to police, the girl hid the rice in an eco-bag she had brought with her and left the store without paying.

The female employee who was assaulted was not injured, police said.

The high school girl has no fixed address. Police are investigating the background of the incident.
