As early as next year, it is expected to tour Tokyo Bay and Osaka Bay in Japan in a “flying car.”
The Yomiuri Shimbun reported on the 27th that the Japanese government is considering approving the commercial operation of so-called “flying cars” as early as 2027-2028.
Japan began public-private consultations in 2018 to put flying cars into practical use, which means electric vertical take-off and landing planes, and test flights were conducted at the Osaka and Kansai World Expo (Osaka Expo) last year. In Tokyo, test flights will take place on the coast after next month.
Regarding the aircraft, some companies have applied to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for a formal certificate of certification of safety necessary for mass production. In order to start commercial operations, the review of them is expected to take place soon.
Vertical take-off and landing planes are first expected to operate in the form of tourist flights in urban areas. The Tokyo and Osaka port areas are mentioned as specific candidates. If safety is confirmed by tourist flights, it is expected to travel between urban areas and major airports within two to three years.
In this regard, airline ANA Holdings announced that it plans to operate a vertical take-off and landing plane between downtown Tokyo and Narita Airport in Chiba Prefecture in 2027. In the case of ANA, it is planning to bring the gas of JoviVision, an American start-up.
Toyota Motor Corp. is also a major shareholder of the company. JobiVision will also launch the world’s first air taxi service in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) this year.
The maximum speed of the Zobie Aviation aircraft reaches 320 kilometers per hour. If it becomes practical, it takes 15 minutes to get to Narita Airport from downtown Tokyo.
The Japanese government plans to approve the commercial operation of vertical take-off and landing planes early to lead the establishment of related norms and support the development of aircraft.
