Karate in Okinawa: Training at the Source (Naha, Japan)

I came to Okinawa, the birthplace of karate, to find out what it’s actually like to train here.

If you’re thinking about coming to Okinawa to learn karate, this video shows you exactly what to expect… not in a modern gym, but where it all began.

In this video, I train in a traditional dojo in Naha, Okinawa, with Yoshimasa Kakazu Sensei (Hanshi 10th Dan), and experience what real Okinawan karate is all about. From the history of karate in the Ryukyu Kingdom to the fundamentals of Shorin-ryu, this is a look at how karate is still practiced in its original form today.

A big thank you to Kenny from Ageshio Japan for organising this experience.

  1. Anyone planning to go train in Okinawa, I suggest you train in Karate at least 1 solid year, minimum 2 to 3 times a week first. In doing so, you will at least get a better understanding in the art in terms of basic moves, basic kata and then go there to pick up additional knowledge in the art of karate-do. Namaste ❤
