The city of Otaru has preserved much of its 120-year-old streetscape, which the author used as a reference to lend realism to the anime.

Herring fishing has long flourished in Hokkaido. Nishin Soba (herring noodles) is a beloved local dish that appears in GOLDEN KAMUY.

Woodcarver Kaizawa Toru is of Ainu descent. He notes that GOLDEN KAMUY has shone a global spotlight on Hokkaido’s rich, often overlooked Ainu culture.
