  1. So good to see visitors being encouraged to explore somewhere other than Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka – Boring! There is so much beauty and so much to see and do in every corner of Japan.

  2. I’m in Nagoya as well speak but sadly for just a couple of days 😂. My current trip is a bit of a whirlwind tour of several cities that I’ve wanted to visit in Japan and time doesn’t allow me to spend 1 week each in seven places lol. I’d happily come back here again and spend a bit more time to get to know it better and do a few day trips from here. I thinks it’s a great place but it gets overshadowed by Kyoto and Tokyo. From a tourism perspective, Nagoya needs to market itself and find a niche. If it could find its “thing” it could do very well since it’s very easy to get to.

  3. Hi Andrews! Your comments are spot on.

I had the opportunity to visit Tokoname and the Inuyama Castle last summer. FYI: The famous American artist Thester Gates actually had residency in Tokoname, profoundly shaping his artistic practice, blending Japanese Mingei (folk art) philosophy with his Black American experience, a hybrid he calls "Afro-Mingei". His work, influenced by Tokoname-yaki (local pottery), emphasizes craft, natural materials, and communal identity.

In Inuyama there is also one of Japan's three most famous teahouses – a national treasury.

For early morning flights out from Chubu Centrair International Airport, I prefer to stay overnight in a hotel close to the Tokoname train station.

Thank you again Andrew for your great videos! 👍

  4. From these three, only been to Inuyama, and it's absolutely worth it! Castles are always nice (and this does have a beautiful location!), and the route to the castle was also great with a couple of cool museums (certainly don't skip Karakuri Tenjikan!) and lots of street food. While beforehand I had considerd combining it with Meiji Mura, I had no issue spending all day at Inuyama.

The other two already were on my radar, but haven't been yet. Another one I would add is Nagashima Spa Land just across the border in Mie prefecture, although I went there from Kuwana. And you could even visit Ise or Iga from Nagoya, though I'd say it's better to actually stay a few days in those places, especially Ise-Shima has a LOT to offer. But Nagoya itself also has quite some things to offer, like the various Toyota museums, the massive SCMaglev railway museum, the Osu area, and let's not forget its cuisine! Quite the underrated city, I don't get why so many people are raving about Osaka yet consider Nagoya boring. I'd say they're kinda similar.

  5. And do nor forget Nagashima Spa Land *the water park is only open in the summer, but the amusement park part is really good, and less crowded than Disneyland Tokyo or Universal Osaka And I like that almost all the rides for adults are made as a kid version as well. Not a big park but some nice roller coasters.

  6. I was looking for some tips in Nagoya but honestly I didn't find much around so I decided not to go there. I guess I'll have to revisit with these tips 🙂

  7. I lived in Nagoya (Komaki) for 5 years. The area really grew on me and I came to really enjoy the Nagoya area. I'm in Tokyo now for work, but we are looking forward to taking some trips to Nagoya. Sounds strange saying we are looking forward to traveling to Nagoya again….I don't think many people say that haha. Nagoya has a lot of charm and personality if you give it a chance.

  8. Another comment said that Nagoya needs to find it's niche. I would offer that it is for families. Firstly, it is so easy to get around. It's transit system is far better than Kyoto. Secondly, it has an awesome mix of things to do both for adults and kids. For example: Shopping in Osu and Sakae/Yabacho, The science centre (kids are free!), the Higashiyama Zoo (kids are free!), Meijimura (must do and so glad to see it featured..buy the train pass, it's worth it to ride on a steam train with the windows down!!!), Nakasendo, Legoland, Ghibli Park, Gifu Castle, Gifu Air and Space Museum…Atsuda Shrine …a 2 hour Kintetsu train ride to the Grand Shrine of Ise (blows all others away…must see)…and so much more. Thirdly, it really affordable. Really affordable to get around with kids and also to eat. Lots of meal sets for kids (google "morning service in Nagoya". Lastly, it is a true Japanese city…it's not fake…it's not touristy … it's just an awesome place filled with good people, awesome food and lots of cool stuff to do for families. …also if you're looking for an awesome place to check out cherry blossoms…and going to Inuyama…get off in Iwakura and walk along Gojogawa to Ishibotoke and jump back on the train…I've seen a lot of cherry blossoms…this ranks with the top places…and it isn't crowded.

  9. I lived in Nagoya for a year and a half. There are many great things about Nagoya. It does have issues. 1. The local JR central company has been very resistant to train passes. I am honestly surprised meitetsu hasn’t tried to capitalize on that.
    2. Many of the fun things to do are very spread out. So the lack of a train pass and many potential day trips places north (gifu, Toyama, takayama, Hokuriku) have a lack of trains and need busses to access for a tourist.
    3. It has a bad rep. Which is a shame.
