Donald Trump went there.

Well known for his off-the-cuff remarks, the U.S. president on Thursday stunned Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during her first visit to the Oval Office as Japan’s leader by invoking Tokyo’s 1941 surprise attack on Pearl Harbor as a parallel to the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran.

Asked by a Japanese reporter why the United States had attacked Iran on Feb. 28 without consulting with allies, Trump appeared to respond with what he thought would be a light-hearted joke.
