Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held talks over the telephone with U.S. President Donald Trump late Friday, with the two agreeing to arrange for the Japanese leader to visit the United States in the spring.

Takaichi told reporters that she had extended her congratulations on the United States’ 250th anniversary this year, and that the two had discussed the Japan-U.S. alliance during their 25-minute call.

“Given this significant anniversary, President Trump and I agreed that this year should be one that opens a new chapter in the Japan-U.S. alliance, further deepening the friendly relations between Japan and the U.S. and broadening our cooperation across a wide range of areas, including the economy and security,” Takaichi said.
