The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla hosted the Kyoto Prize Symposium Benefit Gala on March 10.

The Kyoto Prize Symposium is held in conjunction with San Diego’s major universities and offers free public lectures by winners of the annual Kyoto Prize, Japan’s highest private award for global achievement. The Inamori Foundation awards the prize to individuals and groups around the world for outstanding contributions to society.

This year’s symposium laureate presentations were held March 11-12 at UC San Diego in La Jolla.

The 25th annual gala honored 2025 Kyoto Prize laureates Shun-ichi Amari in advanced technology, Azim Surani in basic sciences and Carol Gilligan in arts and philosophy.

Gala proceeds fund the Kyoto Prize Symposium Scholarships, which go high school students from San Diego and Tijuana. Each of the six winners receives a college scholarship valued at $10,000 or 100,000 pesos for the next academic year. ♦
