A giant pipe erupted from the Earth at a roadway in central Osaka, Japan, on Wednesday, March 11, halting morning traffic as a busy intersection became impassable.
The pipe, measuring 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) in diameter, protruded about 13 meters (42.5 feet) above ground and was part of “an underground conduit being prepared to store rainwater”, according to NHK, citing city officials.
As of Friday morning, only 1.6 meters (5.2 feet) remained stuck above ground after city officials worked to push down the pipe by inserting water to weigh the structure down.
