  1. I haven't attended a Japanese festival really (the closest I've come is watching summer fireworks over Lake Fuji Kawaguchi wearing a yukata), but this is my favourite! Although maybe grandpa overdid it a little bit with his grandson 😅. I loved how brave and righteous his granddaughter was! And what a cool surprise when you turned out to be one of the namahage! I hope you get to go all in next year 😊

  2. what an odd life lesson to pass on "When you dress as a demon to terrify children, make sure you wear loose fitting shoes."

  3. OMG I’m so jealous. I love Japanese folklore (I have an oni no nenbutsu tattoo) and one of my best experiences was visiting the Namahage museum (unfortunately we arrived a day too late for the February festival). We attended a reenactment of a Namahage visit which was amazing. The best thing though, and I know this makes me a bad person, was watching videos from the 80s where the guys really scared the bijesus out of the local kids 😅 one of the local artisans made me a Namahage mask while I was there. It’s my favourite souvenir from my time living in Japan.

  4. Traumatising children as part of twisted Japanese folklore, so funny, har har ! The drunker You get the scarier You are. How hilarious.

  5. This is so fun, what a wild experience to have under your belt! And the opportunity to do it again and hone your act!
