Here is all that is set to take place across the world today.

Counting of votes in Nepal

The counting of votes for Nepal’s 2026 general election is scheduled to begin today. Polling took place on March 5.

Results for many seats in the House of Representatives are expected to be announced on March 6. Final results for the proportional system may take an additional one to two days to finalise.

The polls were held to elect 275 members of the House of Representatives, with approximately 18.9 million eligible voters participating in this first election since the “Gen Z” protests that toppled the previous government in 2025.

Canadian PM visits Japan

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to visit Japan, marking the final leg of a three-nation Indo-Pacific tour.

Carney will meet Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in Tokyo today to discuss economic cooperation, security and defence. Following the meeting, Takaichi will host a working dinner for the Canadian PM and his spouse, Diana Fox Carney.

Carney earlier visited India and Australia as part of the three-nation tour. The visit is a part of a strategy to diversify Canadian trade and reduce economic reliance on the United States.

Hearing in Joshua Wong national security case

Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong is scheduled to appear at the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts for a hearing in connection with his second national security case. Wong faces one count of “conspiracy to collude with a foreign or external force to endanger national security”.

Prosecutors allege that between July and November 2020, Wong conspired with exiled activist Nathan Law and others to request that foreign countries or organisations impose sanctions or blockades against Hong Kong or China.

Wong is currently serving a 56-month sentence (4 years and 8 months) for “conspiracy to commit subversion” in a separate landmark national security case involving 47 pro-democracy figures.

Portugal-Spain summit

The 36th Spanish-Portuguese Summit is set to take today. This high-level meeting between Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro was originally scheduled for January 29 but was postponed following a serious train accident in Adamuz, Spain.

The summit is expected to be overshadowed by a major diplomatic disagreement regarding US and Israeli military operations against Iran, as Spain has strictly refused the use of its military bases for these operations and Portugal has taken a contrasting stance, permitting the US to use the Lajes airbase in the Azores.

Discussions will likely address the impact of threatened US trade reprisals against Spain following its refusal to cooperate militarily. Traditional topics include progress on cross-border infrastructure, high-speed rail links, and joint energy strategies, often referred to as the “Iberian exception”.

SKM to organise a series of protests

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) has announced a series of protests beginning on March 6 to oppose recent central government policies and ‘repression’ by state authorities. The series of protests will kick off with a march in Bathinda, Punjab.

Farmers will hold public meetings in villages across the country. They also plan to take out processions to local post offices to send ‘open letters’ of protest to the President of India.

Some of the demands of the SKM are scrapping the proposed India-US Free Trade Agreement (FTA), immediate withdrawal of the Seed Bill 2025, the Electricity (Amendment) Bill, and four new Labour Codes. They are also demanding a complete loan waiver for all farmers and farm workers, and Restoration of the original Mgnrega framework, and opposition to its replacement by the VB-G RAM G Act.
