The conflict with Iran is putting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz at risk. The Japanese Shipowners’ Association says 44 Japan-related vessels are currently in the Persian Gulf, and it’s working to ensure their safety.
The association’s task force met on Wednesday over potential navigation disruptions in the strait due to the military operations.
The association says Japan-related vessels in the Persian Gulf have a combined 24 Japanese crewmembers. The ships are carrying liquefied natural gas, automobiles and containers.
The group also says four other ships are near the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf of Oman.
The association’s president, Nagasawa Hitoshi, said there are worries about what would happen if they become stuck at sea.
“If the vessels remain stranded for an extended period, there will be various problems including with food and water supplies,” he said. “We will keep monitoring the situation.”
Nagasawa added there have been no reports of damage to Japanese commercial vessels. He said the shipping companies will share information and draw up measures to ensure the safety of their crews.
