The first World Major of the road running year is upon us — the 2026 Tokyo marathon is returning to the streets Sunday.

As one of the most elite marathons in the world, the entry list for both the men’s and women’s divisions are stacked with unmatched talents. Athletes from across the globe are getting ready to make their mark in Japan.

Ethiopian Sutume Asefa Kebede will attempt to make history by becoming the first runner to win in Tokyo for the third consecutive time, while Tadese Takele will be looking for back-to-back wins in the men’s race. A slew of Olympic athletes are also set to participate, like Selemon Barega, Brigid Kosgei and American Sara Hall.

There won’t be a traditional TV broadcast of the Tokyo Marathon in North America, but those looking to follow along can turn to live stream coverage.

Tokyo Marathon 2026 start time

The Tokyo Marathon will begin on the morning of Sunday, March 1, local time in Japan. With the time difference, that means the race will be on Saturday evening in the Eastern time zone.

7:10 p.m. — Marathon abled runners start

7:10 p.m. — 10.7 km race start

Tokyo Marathon 2026 prize money, purse for winner

The 2026 Tokyo Marathon purse is expected to be about $750,000 total, with prize money and World Record Bonuses combined.

Prize money will be awarded to a handful of winners with the first place men’s and women’s marathon runners taking home about $80,000 each.

The 2020 race consisted of only elite runners, while the race was cancelled in 2021 due to COVID-19.
