Kensington cultural hub praised for its ‘authentic’ approach and commitment to Japanese hospitality

Japan House London has been crowned winner of the Best Visitor Experience category at the Cultural Enterprises Awards 2026, beating more than 1,600 cultural organisations from across the UK.

The accolade recognises the venue’s Visitor Experience Team, whose approach is rooted in the Japanese concept of omotenashi — a philosophy centred on warmth, care and anticipating guests’ needs.

Presented by Association for Cultural Enterprises, the awards celebrate excellence across the arts, heritage and cultural sectors, with judges praising Japan House London’s “interesting and authentic” visitor experience and its commitment to embedding hospitality at every level of the organisation.

Hospitality at the heart

Located on Kensington High Street, Japan House London has built a reputation for immersive exhibitions, contemporary design showcases and cultural programming that brings the best of Japan to UK audiences. But it is the front-of-house experience that has now taken centre stage.

The Visitor Experience Team sits at the core of daily operations, proactively engaging with guests and guiding them through exhibitions, displays and events. Continuous training in the principles of omotenashi has led to consistently high praise in visitor surveys, with guests describing staff as “welcoming and knowledgeable” and “exceptionally kind”.

Judges highlighted the strong relationship between staff and visitors, noting how insights from Visitor Experience Assistants are valued internally and can even inform wider commercial opportunities for the organisation.

They described the team as a “fantastic example of truly embedding excellent experience into the heart of running the organisation.”

‘A marker of excellence’

Ria Macha, Head of Visitor Experience & Event Operations, said the team was “beyond proud” to receive the award, calling it a privilege to be recognised alongside leading cultural institutions from across the UK.

Meanwhile, Director General and CEO Sam Thorne described the Cultural Enterprises Awards as “a marker of excellence”, adding that the recognition reflects the team’s energy and commitment to giving every visitor a warm welcome to Japan and its cultures.

A growing global presence

Part of a global initiative, Japan House London is one of three Japan House locations worldwide, alongside centres in Los Angeles and São Paulo. This year, the London branch marked six years of presenting Japanese art, design, gastronomy, innovation and technology to audiences in the UK and beyond.

For an organisation dedicated to cultural exchange, the award is more than a trophy — it’s recognition that genuine hospitality still matters.
