On Okinawa Prefecture’s Aguni Island, the traditional New Year celebration “Maasuyaa,” based on the old calendar, was held from February 16 to 17. On the island, people cherish the old calendar, and February 17, which corresponds to New Year’s Day, is a holiday for elementary and junior high schools. “Maasuyaa” means “salt seller” in the Okinawan language. Children went to houses, performing dances and other acts.
