TOKYO – Japan’s national squad will hold a training camp in Monterrey, Mexico, ahead of the upcoming World Cup and be based in Nashville, Tennessee, during the tournament period, the Japan Football Association said Friday.
The Samurai Blue is scheduled to play an exhibition match against an as-yet-undecided opponent on May 31 at Tokyo’s National Stadium, also known as the MUFG Stadium, before flying to the northeastern Mexican city.
The World Cup, kicking off June 11, will be cohosted by three countries for the first time, with matches held in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
After acclimating to the heat in Monterrey, the Samurai Blue will travel to Nashville to prepare for their opening match against the Netherlands in Group F on June 14 in Arlington, Texas.
They will next face Tunisia on June 20 in Monterrey and a European playoff qualifier on June 25 in Arlington.
